100 Cup Structure

It's tall! It takes patience! It's unique! It is loud when it falls down! :)

Our latest play table is 100 CUP STRUCTURE! It literally took 30 seconds for kids to start playing with it once I had it all set up. I'm excited to see the pictures the kids take of their creations.

I plan to put up a sign near this activity advertising our next Homeschool Club meeting as we will do 3D art and architecture activities.

I am not sure how long I will leave this up. The cups are plastic, so if somebody is too rough on them, they won't last very long. We'll also see what my co-workers say about the noise after a while... or maybe put a rug underneath the table ;)

Up Close with Trees

The current Library Playtable is a self-directed microscope activity.




















Kids can look through the microscope at different woodland items: bark, fern, leaves, pine needles, a pine cone.

Then they can write about or draw what they saw.

The kids have been having great fun with it!

Colors Storytime

Song: What is the Color? I borrowed this from The Mailbox, issue Aug/Sept 2014. I switched up some of the lyrics, but not too much. It is to the tune of BINGO.

What is the color of the a plum?
(Have them guess then show the colored paper) Why purple is it's name-o!

Purple is it's name-o.

Sun - yellow

Leaf - green

Rose - red

Snow - white

Bat - black

Book: GO! GO! GO! STOP! by Charise Mercile Harper The kids helped me with the "go" and "stop" parts throughout the book. What a great book! It really got them involved!

Stop & Go activity with a felt traffic light.
We played the game similar to Mother May I/Red Light Green Light, only all kids could go when I held up the green circle, then stopped when I help up the red one. I prompted them the first time and then didn't talk at all the second time. What fun!







Interactive Story: Is It Red? Is It Yellow? Is It Blue? by Tana Hoban. I asked them different questions about the pages - colors, amount, what are they doing, etc.

Felt song: Brown Skunk, Brown Skunk

Similar to "Brown Bear, Brown bear what do you see?" only with different colored skunks. I passed out the skunks and when I sang out their color, they brought it up to show everyone by placing it on the feltboard.

Goodbye Songs and Bubbles

Activity: Spray Painting

I put water and paint into spray bottles. The kids took turns writing their name on a piece of paper the painting with the spray bottle. They turned out so unique and fantastic!!

Walk In the Woods

I must say, most of today's storytime was "stolen" from Rob Reid (Thanks, Rob!) because it all sounded so fun! And it made my job easier coming up to a busy next few weeks full of preparation for other programs.

Book: Do Princesses Really Kiss Frogs? by Carmela LaVigna Coyle

Interactive Story: I took Mary Quattlebawm's book, Jo MacDonald Hike Through the Woods, and turned into a song with story cards. As we sang the song, I would switch the pictures in my hands so the kids could call out what they were (sometimes they got it, sometimes not... woodpeckers DO look like penguins).







Then, I showed them the book Blueberries for Sal and we discussed eating blueberries and bears and hibernation.







Then, we took turns rolling my large dice and feeding the bear that many blueberries. (The kids had a kick out of playing with this after storytime, too.)

After storytime, the kids could do leaf rubbings and look at leaves, bark, pine needles, pine cones under the kid-friendly microscope.

After story, we briefly talked about holes and which letters do and do not have them. I got out a pile of felt letters and let them put them on the feltboard in the two categories (and then do whatever they wanted with them). Talk about adorable conversations between the kids!!!
