Storytime Setlist Update

There has been so much going on lately that I have had to put the blog on a backburner... Unfortunately, I do not have time to add photos of the pictures books... So without further ado... storytime setlists :)

March 6: Families
Hello, How are you? Song
Shhh! By Kevin Henkes
Mama Hug by Brady Rymer - we used our egg shakers
All Kinds of Families by Mary Ann Hoberman
I Wish I Had a Little Red Box by Dr Jean on her CD Dr Jean SIngs Silly Songs
What a Good Brother by Diane Wright Landolf
Feltboard: 5 Little Monkeys
My Dog is as Smelly as a Dirty Sock by Hanoch Diven
Poem: Pick Up Your Room on page 7 in Fathers, Mothers, Sisters, Brothers
Goodbye Songs

March 9 Family Storytime: Getting Dirty

Hello, How are You? Song
Story: Mud
Feltboard: Piggies
Story: This Farm is a Mess
Song: Laurie Berkner's Pig on Her Head
Story: Robert Munsch's Smelly Socks
Activity: We ripped up mud-colored construction paper, made a "mud puddle," then cut out animals and people (and tractors!) from magazines to put into the mud. Great fine motor and conversation activity!

Next month on April 13, in lieu of Family Storytime, we will have our 10am Puppet Show!

March 13 Storytime: Let's Sing
Hello, How are You? Song
I Love to Sing by Anna Walker
Song in My Tummy by Laurie Berkner
Mystery Ride by Scott Magoon (everytime the words "mystery ride" came up, i sang them out obnoxiously)
Sometimes music does the singing for us. We laid down and listened with our ears and imagined with our brains. We didn't move or talk and then we got up and danced around to tracks 8 and 13 on a Camille Saint-Saens CD.
Pete the Cat and his Four Groovy Buttons by Eric Litwin
The Littlest Birds by The Be Good Tanyas - we danced and "flew" around like birds.
Then we sang "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" the 'normal' way. Then we sang the song as if we were animals.
Goodbye Songs

We had a week off for Jenna's Spring Break.

March 27: Being a Good Friend
Hello, How are You? Song
Big Al by Andrew Clement
Four Friendly Fish from Cathy Bollinger's CD
Bear's New Friend by Karma Wilson

Mary Had a Little Lamb felt with the song from 25 Fun Animal Songs CD
The Big Blue Spot by Peter Holwitz
Then we danced around and used our maracas and egg shakers as we listened to "You've Got a Friend in Me" sung by Yami Bob on the CD "Reggae for Kids: Your Favorite Disney Soundtracks"
Goodbye Songs

NEXT WEEK, April 3: Mysteries

Polar Bear Day

Not only did we get to use our new carpet squares (thank you, Friends of the Library!!), but we continued our exploration of sea-related animals. I must have been on a sea and math kick when I planned out our storytimes for this month :)

Hello, How Are You? by Dr. Jean

Polar Bear Morning by Lauren Thompson

Polar Bear Poem (made up by your's truly)
Polar Bear, Polar Bear,
Oh so tall.
Polar Bear, Polar Bear,
I see you crawl.
Polar Bear, Polar Bear,
I hear you growl (GRRRR!!!)
Polar Bear, Polar Bear,
You can smell fowl.

Polar Bear, Polar Bear,
Eat your meat.
Polar Bear, Polar Bear,
Sun is a treat.
Polar Bear, Polar Bear,
Splash in a wave.
Polar Bear, Polar Bear,
Sleep in a cave.

Bear Play by Miela Ford

Bear Went Over the Mountain by Dr. Jean

Baby Polar Bear by Yannick Murphy

Then we talked about how tall Polar Bears are at their shoulder when they walk on all fours and how tall they are when they stand on their hind feet.

We measured ourselves against a large piece of paper up on the wall that is 6 foot 6, the average height of a polar bear when he is on his hind feet.

And guess what? I am about the same height as a polar bear standing on all fours: 5 foot 3.

A few children and adults were a bit too shy to be measured, but that is quite okay! They still were able to see how tall a polar bear is :)

Then we danced with scarves as we listened to Aurora Borealis on the CD La Bella Stella.

Goodbye songs: It is Time to say Goodbye
Wave your paws goodbye.
Wave your bottom paws goodbye.
Wave your whiskers goodbye.
Wave your tail goodbye.
Wave your fur and say "goodbye!"

Next week, March 6, we will explore mystery stories!

In The Sea Storytime

Today we explored the sea and those animals who live there.

Hello, How Are You? song

There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed the Sea

Song: Octopus by Charlotte Diamond We acted out the song while felt pieces "ate" each other.

I'm the Biggest Thing in the Ocean by Kevin Sherry

Baby Sharkie song

How Deep is the Sea? by Anna Milbourne & Serena Riglette

Seahorse Song - - used a puppet and acted out the words
(to the tune of My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean)
Seahorses are very tiny.
Seahorses are very small.
Don't you ride on a seahorse
Because seahorses aren't very tall.
Don't ride,
Don't ride,
Don't ride on it at all, at all.
Don't ride,
Don't ride,
Don't ride on it at all.

Using printed photos and crepe paper cut to the length of sea creatures, we discovered how long some sea creatures are. We compared our body parts to the crepe paper and even lie down on the ground to see how many children are the same length as some animals. The children played with the crepe paper after this activity.

Angel Fish

Bullet Tuna

Sea Turtle

Octopus

Shark
Length of a dolphin

Length of a sea turtle

Some sharks can be "really, really, really big!!!"

Playing with the crepe paper after Storytime

Size of an Angel Fish
Talking to each other about how long this one is.

Next week we are going to read about polar bears!

Dollhouse

Thank you to the adults and youth who have donated time, money, and supplies towards improving our newly donated dollhouse! We have begun painting it and sprucing it up. Join us this Friday and next month for the final "Design a Dollhouse" programs where you can help Jenna decorate, paint, and wallpaper our dollhouse. Check out what we have done so far!

Thank you to Wednesday Morning Coffee Club for donating money to purchase dollhouse furniture and dolls. If you would like to help us fill our dollhouse for the children (and adults!) to play with, please consider our Amazon Wishlist. Appropriate furniture can also be found at Imagination Station at Oakwood Mall.

Homeschool Club is Back!

Today was our first Homeschool Club gathering of 2013. Please visit our website for future meetings so you and your family can join in the fun as well! www.fallcreekpubliclibrary.org

Today we explored how animals survive the winter, especially in the Poles. We watched a few video clips and talked about how they keep warm. First we watched a short clip about penguins. We also watched Bill Nye the Science Guy's song about blubber and another about hibernation.

Then we put our experiment caps on and dressed one finger up and kept the other one naked to see the difference between just skin and some protection from the cold.

Then we tried vaseline, to see if it acted like blubber. Overwhelming response was "yes!"

Finally, we made a polar bear craft.

See you next month!
